Developer Spotlight: From A Themer’s Perspective Part 2

Posted on: October 26th, 2012 by Gage Castillo No Comments

Before I get into our developer spotlight of the day, I wanted to address some issues and talk that has been surrounding this series since our first entry posted last week. There has been claims that this series is a “drag for attention”, and that it is in the BlackBerry’s fan base best interest to just move on from these types of articles. Another claim was that we are aiming to hurt RIM’s reputation with the posts of these articles. So let’s make this clear, SliceoftheNet does not post any content that the writer is not passionate about, we do not aim to profit off readership period. As the owner of SliceoftheNet, I am an avid BlackBerry fan, who is excited for what the future holds for BlackBerry and I am in this for the long haul, despite what decisions RIM makes for the platform. It simply comes down to this, if you don’t like what we are posting, please feel free to remove us from your bookmarks and social feeds. Finally, I want to thank our own Scott Burns for making this series happen! Without him, I wouldn’t be doing this. Thank you Scott!

Todays Developer spotlight falls on a Theme dev best known by the name of Mobster Mobile Designs, who surprisingly to my own experience has been a very pleasant and fun person to converse with. I recently was acquainted with Jennifer over certain tweets with mutual friends, I couldn’t help being drawn to the positive energy she gives off when she tweets, It was a no brainer to follow her! It wasn’t until recently, I made the connection with the work she has done on the Theme dev side, having personally recommended themes she has created in the past to my friends. Her work speaks for itself, being clean, clever and overall inspiring productivity. For a full look at her work you can check her out on BlackBerry App World or her personal website: We asked her the same questions as our last interviewee, let’s see how she answers: Read the full interview!

Developer Spotlight: From A Themer’s Perspective

On October 12, 2012 RIM announced that there would not be a Theme Builder 7. There has been quite a buzz about it on my twitter timeline. In the days following the announcement, things got a little heated. Now that they have cooled off I wanted to take this opportunity to talk with a few of the people most directly affected by this news.

If you are an owner of a BlackBerry 7 device and you currently have, or have had, a non stock theme on it. You have the very outspoken Lucky45 (@_Lucky45) in part to think for that. He worked with various members of the BlackBerry community to hack Theme Builder 6. In a team effort with drkapprenticeDESIGNS, the end result was the first iteration of the MINI_Banner theme series. The theme has since then evolved into various forms. From the humble beginning with a smaller than stock banner, and the PlayBook icon set to moving ‘live’ banners, a unique notification glow and special tribute editions to various BlackBerry blogs. With numerous popular themes under his belt Lucky45 really out did himself with the MINI_Banner series.

Hey everyone, iTunes finally updated our podcast feed so we now have episode 13 available for your enjoyment! Of course, there are a few hiccups with the audio quality, being live and having very little editing done you might notice my voice quality not coming through on certain parts of the episode. I am actively working on editing out sound interference from the other end of the call, so please expect an updated version of this episode as soon as I finish editing! Also, if you have missed this episode, and happen to be at the computer, you might want to watch the video version of the podcast on youtube!

This time around, we actually spontaneously decided to do this one and in light of that we decided to do things a bit different! This episode includes a bit of techy, video game and bacon talk! We plan to roll this out in two phases, first being the youtube video, and second being the mp3 version on iTunes (we’ll have this ready around the start of the weekend)! <– Scott’s WordPress site, for Tiny Paperclip peeps!
